AI AND ART EXPERIENCE MEDIUM PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION: “LAUREN: ANYONE HOME?“

Sponsored by Telekom’s and Kunstmuseum Bonn’s joint initiative titled “Human AI Art Award,” LAUREN: Anyone Home? represents the potential of this field to provoke meaningful discourse. This initiative highlights the reflective ways AI reshapes our understanding of creativity and technology, by supporting works at the intersection of AI and the arts with the potential to productively influence or change the way technology is applied, used, or perceived today. McCarthy’s project epitomizes the award’s mission in its critical engagement with AI and its reimagining of how humanity, nature, and technology might coexist. LAUREN is a performance installation where the artist becomes a human Alexa, watching over you in your home and controlling it for you as a sentient, intuitive virtual assistant. The performance begins with the installation of custom smart devices, including cameras, microphones, and appliances, transforming the space into a fully connected smart home. Unlike traditional smart home technologies, LAUREN brings the depth and understanding of a human presence, anticipating needs and desires with an intuition and perception that goes beyond algorithms. This humanized voice assistant mediates the tensions between intimacy and privacy, convenience and agency, and the role of human labor in the future of automation. Through this lens, LAUREN invites audiences to reflect on their relationship with technology and the evolving dynamics of control within their personal spaces, offering a provocative re-imagining of what smart technology could be.
