ONLY ON EARTH: EXTENDED Q&A AND TALK

SATURDAY MARCH 15
14:30
Pavlos Zannas Theater

Robin Petre’s film takes us to southern Galicia, one of the most fire-prone regions in Europe, highlighting the harsh beauty and delicate balance of the natural world. During the hottest summer ever recorded, uncontrollable flames consume everything in their path, while people and animals fight their own battles for survival. One can draw direct parallels between the film and the situation Greece has been experiencing in recent years, with devastating wildfires and floods. The Heinrich Böll Foundation recently supported a project focusing on the areas affected by the natural disasters of summer 2023, which left behind casualties, destroyed homes and landscapes, loss, and uncertainty. Photographer Ilir Tsouko and writer Anja Troelenberg traveled to Rhodes, Thessaly, and Evros a few months after the disasters, documenting both despair and hope, the challenges, and the resilience of people and their communities – indirectly linking these individual stories to the broader climate crisis affecting the entire planet. The project Beyond Destruction is a story of survival, the meaning of community, and the indomitable human spirit. In the discussion following the screening, the director will talk with Michalis Goudis, Director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and Ilir Tsouko about the new reality of climate change and the lessons learned: the former through the making of the film, the latter through their work on the Beyond Destruction project.
