Film description
The twelfth feature by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Silvio Soldini transforms Rosella Postorino’s international best-selling novel, At the Wolf’s Table, into a gripping and profoundly human wartime drama set during World War II. Autumn 1943: Rosa, a young Berliner fleeing the ruins of her city, takes refuge in a remote village near the eastern border, where her husband’s family lives. But beneath the village’s tranquil surface lies a sinister truth: the existence of the nearby Wolf’s Lair, Hitler’s hidden headquarters. There, Rosa and other young women are forced to risk their lives as food tasters each day, ensuring the Führer’s meals are safe from poison. Between gnawing hunger and constant fear, fragile bonds of solidarity, rivalry, and desire emerge among the women. Rosa, initially mistrusted as an outsider, finds her place within the group, only to be shaken by the forbidden attraction she feels towards an SS officer, a perilous reminder of her own yearning to feel alive amid the suffocating grip of war.
