BARREN LIVES

No other Brazilian filmmaker has lived through so many diverse periods of Brazil’s film production and at the same time have such an expressive oeuvre to his credit. Born in Sao Paulo in 1928, he began his career with Rio 40 Graus, a powerful feature which won the prize for Best Young Director at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, 1956. His films have screened at many prestigious international film festivals. In the eighties, when Brazil was going through a period of "political opening", Nelson Pereira made the film Memories of Prison, a hymn to the love of freedom.
