Artistic Director Orestis Andreadakis welcomed the audience with a surprise announcement. “This year, alongside the films we will watch in the theatres, we will also take part in a film that is being shot as we speak and will continue to unfold throughout the Festival. It is a film created for the Festival by our Grand Sponsor, COSMOTE TELEKOM, produced by COSMOTE TV, about the history and the experience of the Thessaloniki Film Festival".


















Amidst a warm and moving ambiance, turning the spotlight on documentaries, the filmmakers and the protagonists of their films, the awards of the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival were bestowed on Sunday March 15th 2026.

Committed to the vision of an inclusive cinema, TFF expanded its accessible initiatives in this year’s edition through a truly pioneering endeavor. For the first time in Greece, a documentary was screened under enhanced accessibility conditions through the use of film pictograms (FilmpiX), further enhancing the viewing experience for neurodiverse audiences. This endeavor was made possible with the support of Alpha Bank, the Festival's accessibility sponsor.

More than 700 XR screenings took place as part of the Immersive: All Around Cinema section

The installation HeartBeat: Son cœur a trouvé sa cadence dans le silence des rencontres by French visual artist Fanny Fortage, also known as Bonnie Lisbon, attracted significant interest, welcoming more than 500 visitors during TiDF28.




The Closing Ceremony of the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival unfolded on Sunday, March 15, in a packed Olympion theatre, bringing the curtain down on eleven vibrant days of cinematic discoveries, creative encounters and meaningful dialogue sparked by the realities explored through contemporary documentary filmmaking.



The spotlight then shifted to the screening of the documentary, followed immediately by an OSCARS®-themed party at the Olympion, featuring a DJ set inspired by film soundtracks, photo props, a themed cocktail, beer by Fischer and Jameson Black Barrel. The celebration continued with the live broadcast of the OSCARS® ceremony from Los Angeles, organised in collaboration with the Festival’s Grand Sponsor, COSMOTE TELEKOM. The closing film of the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
