“Black is Honest and Beautiful.” This is the opening line of Agnes Varda’s blasting film on the Black Panthers Party and their vision for a new cultural and political revolution – which she shot with a 16mm camera she borrowed from Berkeley University activists in California. As she was present in a rally in Oakland, where people demonstrated against the arrest of one of the party founders, she surrenders to the crowds’ energy, without losing her sharp gaze on the international political scene.
