Mifune, the Last Samurai

A portrait of Toshiro Mifune, the most emblematic actor of Japanese Cinema. Just as John Ford and John Wayne elevated the Western genre into sagas exploring the human side of America’s violent expansion, Kurosawa and Mifune transformed the chanbara film – the period sword fi ghting movie – into bold narratives exploring individuality versus repression in Japanese society. A film about the birth of an idol and a new kind of cinema that has the meditative qualities and stoic force of a samurai.
