An ambitious journalist and a talented director work together here to capture the singular character of a small town in Georgia in an alternative way. In her reports, the journalist slides from the minor and insignificant to the major and momentous with an ease that seems superficial; trailing her, the director manages to spotlight the lightness inside things of importance and the melancholy within all that, at first sight, seems laughable. At the point where these two gazes intersect, The Dazzling Light of Sunset rises before us like a delightful, bitter-sweet mosaic built out of a community’s quotidian moments but also its special occasions, and out of all the things that comprise its utterly unique and irreplaceable soul. By means of exquisitely crafted shots comparable to small works of art and with her ability to sense the tenor and situational particularity of each moment, Salomé Jashi turns observation into an astonishing analog of affection.
