Zorba the Greek

A young Englishman comes to Crete to take over a mine that he has inherited.There, he meets and becomes partners with Zorba, a tough, instinctive man who will change the young man’s outlook on life. Zorba, an impulsive fortune-hunter with a lust for life, becomes the young man’s mentor. In the end, their venture fails, the Englishman’s relationship with a young widow ends in tragedy, yet Zorba still manages to retain his optimistic faith in life.

Michael Cacoyannis

He was born in Cyprus in 1922. He studied Law in England, Acting at the Central School of Dramatic Art and Direction at the Old Vic School. He is responsible for the coming of age of Greek cinema. Thanks to him, actresses like Irene Papas, Melina Mercouri and Elly Lambeti became international stars. He has had the privilege to work with many legendary actors, such as Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Katherine Hepburn,Tom Courtenay,Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Alexander, Charlotte Rampling, et al. Most of his films became international successes.
