He Who Must Die

In a famine-torn Greece under Turkish rule, the locals of the small Cretan village of Lykovryssi stage a Passion Play every seven years. One year earlier, the villagers who will play the roles of Jesus, Mary and the Apostles are chosen and they proceed to prepare accordingly. But things get complicated when the starving survivors of a neighboring village razed by the Turks, led by their priest, come to Lykovrissi for food and shelter and are met with hostility by the townsfolk.The village elders and the priest refuse to help them, while Manolios (who is to play Jesus) and Katerina (a widow of questionable morals who has the role of Mary Magdalene), together with the village poor, try to help the homeless villagers.The tension will lead to an armed conflict...

Jules Dassin

He was born in Connecticut, USA. He started his cinema career as Alfred Hitchcock’s trainee. He was forced to leave the USA after the censorship on his work during the McCarthy period. He shot Rififi in France, a film that won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was in Cannes that Dassin met Melina Mercouri, whom he later married. In 1974 he took up residence in Greece and worked again in the theater.
