A Wake for Shakespeare

2016 marks 400 years since William Shakespeare’s death. In Athens, the renowned basement of the Art Theatre opened its doors for a completely unconventional wake. Great actors, directors, songwriters and critics started off at nine in the evening and, until dawn, they presented a unique festival of immersion into Shakespeare’s universe, through monologues, scene excerpts, improvisations and sonnets. The film recorded what took place at the theatre and combined the footage with images from the streets of Athens during that night, in an effort to capture something of Shakespeare’s spirit.
