“Ugly King” was the nickname of the Kurdish director Yilmaz Güney, who became famous outside Turkey for his recognizable film style and is still regarded as an idol within the country for his political beliefs. A young German-Kurdish filmmaker decides to learn who was really the man that became his greatest influence and delivers a manifold portrait of a fiery personality full of vision, but also contradictions.
