Vardis Marinakis

He was born 36 years ago in Athens. In 1995 he graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of the NTUA, but soon decided to turn to cinema. That same year, he enrolled at London’s National Film and Television School, where he pursued a three-year postgraduate course in Fiction Direction under the tutelage of Stephen Frears. While still a student, he took his first steps as a director with two student short films, The Lodge and Danny Miles Is Leaving Home. Acclaim was not long in coming, with the Τhe Lodge winning the Greek Film Centre’s Incentive Award and a Special Newcomer Distinction from the Vakalo School of Art and Design. His next short film, Summer Love, was produced in 2002 and received numerous international distinctions. This was followed in 2005 by the short film Second Nature, which won, among others, an Honorary Mention at the Locarno Film Festival and was described as “a bold film that talks about joy, fear and man’s place in the universe. An ode to the essence of life.” Besides his film work from 2000 to date, he has also worked as a director of commercials.
