Ceddo

A Wolof-speaking village at an unspecified time in the past. The Ceddo (the non-Moslems) have kidnapped the Princess Dior Yacine in protest against forcible conversion to Islam. Her kidnapper kills first the king’s heir and then her betrothed, who have been sent to her rescue. In the ensuing council the Ceddo express their sorrow but the Imam violently opposes them. The King rebukes the Imam for going beyond his duty though important councilors support him. They plot to install the Imam on the throne and marry the Princess to him. When the King dies from a snake bite, the Imam succeeds him and the village prepares for the mass conversion to Islam. Two warriors are sent to liberate the Princess and they kill her kidnapper. When she sees the Imam on her father’s throne, she seizes a rifle and kills him.
