THE TASTERS

Silvio Soldini (Milan, 1958) is one of Italy’s most acclaimed contemporary filmmakers, known for blending intimate storytelling with sharp social and emotional observation. After directing early shorts and documentaries in the 1980s, he achieved international recognition with his debut feature L’aria serena dell’ovest (1990), winner of the Grolla d’Oro for Best Screenplay and the Grand Prix at Annecy. His reputation grew with Un’anima divisa in due (1993), presented at Venice, and Le acrobate (1997), which competed at Locarno and San Francisco. Soldini’s breakthrough came with Pane e tulipani (Bread and Tulips, 2000), a critical and box-office triumph that won nine David di Donatello Awards, five Nastri d’Argento, and received European Film Award nominations, cementing his status as a major voice in Italian cinema. He has since moved fluidly between genres, from the award-winning Giorni e nuvole (2007), surreal comedies like Agata e la tempesta (2004) and Il comandante e la cicogna (2012), and documentaries exploring literature and vision. His most recent works include Il colore nascosto delle cose (Venice, 2017) and 3/19 (2021). The Tasters (2025) marks his twelfth feature film.
