EGON SCHIELE – EXCESS
West Germany-France-Austria 1981 95 35mm Color
Film description
The film chronicles the defining moments in the life Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele, who died at the young age of 28. His work greatly influenced the perception of eroticism in painting through the depiction of the female nude, and had a decisive effect on later generations of visual artists. Besides exploring the dark aura and boldness of his erotic compositions, the film also denounces moral conservatism, censorship and the suppression of sexual expression in early 20th century Viennese society, advocating total freedom in art. Let us not forget that Schiele was accused and convicted of pornography.
