COUNTERFEIT COIN

Greece 1955 121 35mm B&W
Film description
A counterfeit coin goes from hand to hand, telling its story in four stand-alone episodes. The coin has been made by an honest goldsmith, Anargyros, who is captivated by the charming Mrs. Fifi. He has, in fact, spent one hundred gold sovereigns in order to make the coin. However, nobody will buy it, since it is clearly counterfeit. The coin falls into the hands of a beggar who pretends to be blind and is constantly arguing with a prostitute who works on the same stretch of street. The coin then falls into the hands of a poor orphaned young woman, Fanitsa, who is in danger of being evicted, but her miserly landlord, Mr. Vassilis, agrees to buy the coin in order to help out the young girl. Following this, the coin ends up becoming the good-luck coin baked in a traditional New Year’s Day cake. The coin is found by a poor painter, Pavlos, who has recently married a rich heiress, Aliki. It thus becomes a symbol of their strong but short-lived love.
