Ben Wheatley’s new film is the epitome of a midnight movie. A delusional clash of genres and realities, a cinematic experience not easily summarized. The story begins with a failed String Theory experiment that leads to chaotic situations, sending Corey Harlan (Sam Riley) to a labyrinthine manor governed by the enigmatic, multidimensional Aclima (Alexandra Maria Lara). Each door opens onto a different universe, filled with noir conspiracy plots, post-apocalyptic desolate places, and surreal romances. Wheatley draws inspiration from an eclectic range of influences: Airfix’s handmade models, the retro sci-fi series Thunderbirds, the universe of author Philip K. Dick, and the imaginary world of Zelda, intertwining each of these into a hallucinatory film that is dark, funny, and unpredictable, all at the same time.
