For 25 years the Thessaloniki International Film Festival’s Balkan Survey section, curated by Dimitris Kerkinos, has been showcasing the best samples of the Balkan area’s film production. Well-known directors, as well as promising newcomers tackle a variety of challenging themes in the core program of this year’s edition that consists of 15 films, both shorts and features. Balkan Survey also presents the tribute “Before the Wave Breaks” with 8 iconic films directed by the predecessors of the New Romanian cinema.

Each year the International Competition of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival discovers the boldest new voices of the global contemporary independent cinema and presents the first or second films by the most promising filmmakers. The International Competition section of the 59th TIFF is comprised of 15 films, 
three of which are Greek.

The 59th Thessaloniki International Film Festival presents a large tribute to the Greek queer cinema, with a selection of 38 short and feature films dating from the late 1960s to the present day that showcase a lesser-known chapter in the history of Greek cinema.

Spanish filmmaker Jaime Rosales, Dutch director Nanouk Leopold and Chilean visual artists-filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña will be honored in the tributes of the 59th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. The filmmakers will attend the festival to present and discuss their work with the Thessaloniki audiences.

The countdown begins for the 59th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (November 1-11, 2018) and it is with great pleasure that we announce that Alfonso Cuarón’s latest much-anticipated film Roma, winner of the Golden Lion award in the 75th Venice Film Festival, will be presented in Greece in a special festival screening during the 59th TIFF.
