Multi-award winning director Nicolas Philibert, one of the most important documentary filmmakers of our times and the 27th TIDF’s guest, received the Festival’s honorary Golden Alexander on Friday, March 7th, at Olympion theater, prior to the screening of the film On the Adamant (2023), Golden Bear winner at the Berlinale. The award was bestowed to the exceptional French filmmaker by the Festival’s General Director, Elise Jalladeau, and the Head of Programming, Yorgos Krassakopoulos, who welcomed the audience.

The opening ceremony of the 27th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival was held on Thursday, March 6th, amidst a warm atmosphere at the packed Olympion theater. This year’s official opening ceremony took on a special vibe as six children, members of the Greek National Robotics Team, who recently participated in the Robotics Olympiad held in South Korea and won eight medals, served as hosts. The Secretary General of Contemporary Culture, Eleni Doundoulaki, the Vice Governor of the Region of Thessaloniki and Deputy Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, Kostas Gioutikas, as well as the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis honored the event with their presence.

In this year’s edition, an exciting selection of Greek-speaking and English-speaking podcasts are lining up at the Podcast Competition and the Nexus Section. The Podcast Competition includes 10 podcasts (nine Greek-speaking and one English-speaking), setting their eyes on the Best Podcast Award, accompanied by a 2,000-euro cash prize.

On Thursday March 6th, at 7.15pm, the film About a Hero by Piotr Winiewicz will signal the official opening of the 27th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. The Festival will call it a wrap on Sunday March 16th, with Shoshannah Stern’s Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore that unravels the story of Marlee Matlin, the first ever deaf recipient of an Academy Award for acting.

The Immersive competition section of the 27th TiDF lines up 8 films echoing powerful political, social and historical vibes, while touching upon a series of issues related to the boundaries of human consciousness. The Golden Alexander Immersive will be bestowed to the section’s best film, accompanied by a 2,000-euro cash prize.
