Highlights of new section “Cinema” & segment “Music”

Alfred Hitchcock, Abbas Kiarostami and the world-renowned Parisian cinema school La Femis: Rendez-vous with film legends.

The Rolling Stones, Placebo, Laibach: Three top rock bands in smashing performances.

Music and cinema have always been favorite topics of both the documentary filmmakers and the audience. The 19th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival introduces a new section titled “Cinema”, dedicated to people, genres and memorable moments of the seventh art. Together with TDF’s popular “Music” segment, they invite us to enjoy an entertaining and promising selection of documentaries that will be screened in this year’s edition.

Cinema

Analyzing Hitchcock: The famous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, one of the most iconic ones in the history of cinema, is explored in Alexandre O. Philippe’s 78/52, reflecting the genius and obsessions of the prominent director. The film will have its International Premiere in Thessaloniki.
Abbas Kiarostami x 2: The 19th TDF presents Abbas Kiarostami’s last film Take Me Home, a short documentary set in Southern Italy, as well as 76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami, a touching intimate portrait of the late filmmaker directed by his long-time friend and collaborator Seifollah Samadian.
Only the best: Through a highly challenging admission process, hard work and graduation exams, young talents aspire to follow the steps of many distinguished alumni at the prestigious Parisian cinema school La Femis in Claire Simon’s The Graduation.

Let's rock & roll: The Rolling Stones tour Latin America, visit Cuba for the first time and rock an entire continent in Paul Dugdale’s euphoric documentary The Rolling Stones Ole Ole Ole!: A Trip Across Latin America.
Indigenous icons: Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World by Catherine Bainbridge centres on the significant role and influence of Native Americans in popular music history. Great artists of Native American origin such as Jimi Hendrix, Link Wray, Charley Patton, Robbie Robertson and so many more are the main focus of the documentary that features interviews with Martin Scorsese, Slash, Marky Ramone, Iggy Pop, etc.
From Russia with love: Just before their 20th anniversary, Placebo play in 10 Russian cities and delve into the country’s alternative culture in Placebo: Alt. Russia by Charlie Targett-Adams.
Forbidden zone: In August 2015 the controversial Slovenian band Laibach became the first foreign rock group ever to perform live in North Korea. The documentary Liberation Day by Ugis Olte and Morten Traavik records this landmark event and the inevitable culture clash that arises.
Mystery murder: Kasper Collin's I Called Him Morgan unfolds a story that shocked the jazz community in 1972, when the celebrated jazz musician Lee Morgan was shot dead by his wife Helen during a gig in a club in New York.
