The artistic residency “A room of one’s own”, founded in 2017, launches its collaboration with the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Within the framework of this initiative, Greek filmmaker Alkistis Efthimiou will participate in an international artistic residency in Bilbao, with her project Your Delicate Friend.
The program announced its international pop-up residency initiative for female filmmakers who want to develop their feature film projects in open and creative spaces.
The residency program will offer accommodation and Alkistis Efthimiou will be mentored by Alba Cros, the director of Les amigues de l'Àgata. . Alkistis Efthimiou participated with her project at the AGORA lab of the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival and subsequently at the 3rd Evia Film Project. Both industry programs are organized by the Thessaloniki Film Festival organization. Alkistis Efthimiou is a writer and anthropologist, interested in debating the sensitiveness of cultural texts and exploring, through art, the ways we manage the emotional impact the world has over us and vice versa. She holds a BA in Media and Cultural Studies and an MA in Gender, Society and Politics from Panteion University, as well as an MA in Museum Studies from University College London.
The residency program was founded in 2017 and was initially addressed to Basque women filmmakers. The program is promoted by the Basque Know How Fundazioa with the support of the BBK and the Basque Government. It is the dream of a group of women filmmakers, inspired by the poignant and always up-to-date titular feministic essay written by Virginia Woolf, which found its home in the heart of Bilbao. Its first tenant was actress Naiara Carmona. From its beginning, it has welcomed directors of prominent films such as Ainhoa Rodríguez, María Herrera, Mikele Landa, Naia Arantzamendi, Tamara Lucarini and Estibaliz Urresola. Urresola developed her latest feature film 20.000 especies de abejas / 20,000 Species of Bees during her residency, whereas the film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was awarded with the Silver Bear.
