57th TIFF: Cinema for All - Screening of the Film "We Only Have One Life"

57th THESSALONIKI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
November 3-13, 2016

CINEMA FOR ALL
SCREENING OF THE FILM WE ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE BY YORGOS TZAVELLAS

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival, in collaboration with the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Cultural Centre as accessibility sponsors, and the Movement of Artists with Disabilities as accessibility advisor, is improving the accessibility of its facilities and sharing the magic of cinema with all viewers with no exception.

The accessibility improvements begin during the 57th edition, in TIFF’s facilities as well as its content, which are the films. Within this framework, in an emotionally charged atmosphere, the universally accessible screening of the film We Only Have One Life by Yorgos Tzavellas, took place on Friday, November 4, 2016, at Olympion, in the presence of the Minister of Culture and Sports Aristides Baltas, TIFF’s General Director Elise Jalladeau and TIFF’s Director, Orestis Andreadakis.

The film was screened with audio description [AD] for the blind and visually impaired and SDH [Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing] (curation and certification by the Movement of Artists with Disabilities).

“Today the Thessaloniki International Film Festival opens a new page regarding the accessibility of its facilities. We often say we have films for everyone. That is not the case, though, because not everyone can enter a theatre the way theatres are or the way staircases and films are, without the proper planning”, noted Mr. Andreadakis. He also added that the Festival’s goal is to create a film library with material from prominent Greek films, the content of which will be accessible to all viewers.

For his part, Antonis Rellas, film director and founding member of the Movement of Artists with Disabilities, who also attended the screening, stressed that “the goal of this collaboration is for the modifications that will take place at the Festival facilities to remain as part of the city, and for the universally accessible screenings to give all viewers the opportunity to enjoy equal rights to accessibility to the films’ content”.

Soon after, the journalist and film critic Iason Triantafillidis, who was also present at the event, talked about the unique story of the film and its director, Yorgos Tzavellas.

It should be reminded that the film The Ogre of Athens by Nikos Koundouros is also a universally accessible screening included in the program of this year’s edition. Moreover, 17 Greek films will be also screened with Greek subtitles based on the dialogues, for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing.
