Cannes’ Palm d’ Or winner Ruben Östlund attends this year’s edition on the occasion of the retrospective to his work presented by TIFF. The Swedish filmmaker will talk about cinema and life in an open, illuminating, and hopefully delightful discussion, moderated by Yorgos Krassakopoulos.

“2.39:1 – Greek Cinema Goes Cinemascope Again!”

The masterclass explores the magic and challenges of the film frame though the cinemascope format, which is lately used more and more often in Greek films. Two distinguished Greek cinematographers participate in the event; Christos Karamanis (GSC) shares his experiences with the audience and DoP Argyris Theos moderates the conversation. The event is organized by the Greek Society of Cinematographers (GSC) with the support of TIFF.

“Taking Roots: 14 Films, 14 Inceptions, 14 Roots of the Soul”

The 58th TIFF proposes a subversive approach to cinema, selecting the International Competition films in the light of The Need for Roots, inspired by the 20th-century iconic book of the same title by the French philosopher Simone Weil (1909-1043). TIFF invited 14 young Greek artists to watch the films of the IC section, become inspired and create 14 original works for each one of them. These works will be presented for the first time in the exhibition, which is organised by TIFF with the support of the 6th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, the Thessaloniki Port Authority and Samsung. “Loafing and Camouflage: From the archive of Nikos Perakis”

The exhibition is dedicated to Nikos Perakis’ Loafing and Camouflage, one of the most iconic and successful films of contemporary Greek cinema that won four awards in TIFF’s 1984 edition. The exhibition takes place on the occasion of the director’s decision to donate his archive to ELIA-MIET and is organized by the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation (MIET) with the support of TIFF, presenting documents and archive material of the film’s production, promotional material, etc. (opening hours: Monday, Wednesday 09:00-15:30, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 09:00-20:00, Saturday 09:30-16:00)
Photo exhibition #CedefopPhotoAward 2017

#CedefopPhotoAward is a photography competition organised by Cedefop, the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, and endorsed by the European Commission. For the 2017 edition, Cedefop asked teams of vocational education and training learners in the EU to share their experiences through original photo stories. The first- and second-prize winning stories, along with the 18 runners-up, will be exhibited at the Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki during the 58th TIFF. The exhibition is organized by Cedefop and curated by TIFF and Cedefop.

The Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki hosts the photography group exhibition "Dreams", presenting the perspective on dreams by 11 photographers in 64 photos. The exhibition is part of the 4thThessaloniki Photography Festival that takes place in various parts of the city (organized by "Fotoporoi, "KLIKers ", "F ", curated by Tasos Schizas).

The >>Film Forward segment of the 58th TIFF presents 4 films of the 6th Thessaloniki Biennale, the thematic core of which is home as an imagined construct. Check out the films in TIFF’s program (Anamones by Andri Tsiouti, Michalis Charalambous, Giorgos Stylianou, Stefanos Papadas, Ethics of Survival by Walter Solon, Glow in the Dark by Stefanos Tsivopoulos and Riding My Tiger:Trilogi Jawa III by Ascan Breuer).
Cinema for All – Accessibility format screenings
Two accessibility format screenings of two classic and beloved Greek films will take place during the 58th TIFF: the hilarious James Bond parody film Thou-Vou Bald Agent, Operation Havoc (1969) directed by the legendary Greek actor Thanassis Vengos, as well as the compelling social drama The Match-making of Anna (1972) by the celebrated Greek filmmaker Pantelis Voulgaris. These films will be screened with audio description [AD] for the blind and visually impaired and SDH [Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing] (curation and certification by the Movement of Artists with Disabilities). The event is part of TIFF’s initiative to share the magic of cinema with all viewers without exception for yet another year, via the accessibility improvements made in its venues and content in collaboration with the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Cultural Centre as accessibility sponsors and the Movement of Artists with Disabilities.
“The Lost Highway of Greek Cinema: Balconies A & B”
Two rare Greek films from the past will be screened in their original 35 mm copies, in collaboration with the Film Directors & Producers Association of Greece (ESPEK): Giorgos Stamboulopoulos’ Open Letter (1968) follows a young man on his tumultuous journey to personal maturity and awakening, while Costas Ferris’ Prometheus Second Person (1975) is a modern adaptation of Prometheus Bound that vividly explores the relations between spectacle, viewer and authority.

In collaboration with the TIFF and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of film music signed by Greek and Italian composers. The program features Sweet Suite-a tribute to Manos Hadjidakis by Nikos Kypourgos, based on film-music themes (Sweet Movie, Never on a Sunday, America America, etc) signed by the unforgettable Greek composer, as well as works by two iconic Italian composers, Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone (La Strada, The Godfather and La Dolce Vita, inter alia).
