VERNISSAGE OF THE EXHIBITION
MIRO FROM MALLORCA AND THE WORKSHOPS OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The opening of the exhibition Miro from Mallorca and the Workshops of Contemporary Art was held on Saturday November 14th at the port B1 Warehouse. The event was attended by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Pavlos Geroulanos, the President of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Ms. Katerina Koskina, the Director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Ms. Maria Tsantsanoglou, the Director of the Contemporary Art Centre, Ms. Syragos Tsiara, the President of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Mr. Georges Corraface as well as by its Director, Despina Mouzaki.
The curator of the exhibition, Marios Eleftheriadis, conducted the visit and Mr. Geroulanos showed a specific interest in the technique of the exhibits. The present exhibition happens to coincide with the Five Museums Movement – a coming together of five museums to promote art and culture in Thessaloniki: the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Macedonian Contemporary Art Museum and the Teloglion Foundation of Art. The Minister of Culture and Tourism praised this collaboration, adding that: “a dynamic consolidation is essential and in keeping with the ministry’s views and from now piecemeal approaches will no longer be encouraged for the promotion of culture.” The representatives of the Contemporary Art Centre explained that this Five Museums Movement is an innovation both by Greek and by European standards, taking collaboration a step further from the limited exchange of exhibits. The members of the National Museum for Contemporary Art stressed the importance of this common effort promoted by the European Union. Finally, TIFF Director Despina Mouzaki talked about the long-term association between the Museum and the Festival, calling it “a clearly fertile cooperation”.
The exhibition Miro from Mallorca and the Workshops of Contemporary Art is the result of a common effort by the Thessaloniki Contemporary Art Centre, the Teloglion Foundation of Art (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and the Pilar i Joan Miro Foundation in Mallorca to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Every evening from six to nine o’clock a 54’ documentary will be shown at the B1 Warehouse, The phosphorescent trail of snails directed by Cesc Mulet, a retrospective that takes the spectator back to that magical moment in which Miro began to splash colours into his dreams.
