BALKAN SURVEY: A Turkish Spotlight

1999 92 35mm Colour
The film recounts the misfortunes of Isa, a young man living in a dilapidated old building in Istanbul. While trying to eke out a living working for various TV series, he is accused of stealing 50 dollars from a gangster who orders him to return the money within 24 hours. As he has no money, Isa decides to kill himself, rather than face reprisals from his creditor's henchmen. But just as he is about to pull the trigger, his landlord rings the doorbell. He's come to demand four months' unpaid rent, and threatens eviction if the money isn't paid within four days. Although this new problem strengthens his resolve to kill himself, Isa suddenly goes to his landlord's door, shoots him in the chest and then falls next to him in a faint. For some reason, Isa isn't considered a suspect, and when the gangster comes over to collect the money, his neighbor Meryem pays the debt out of her own savings. However, his encounter with this enigmatic, diabolical woman proves fatal.
