New Horizons: US indies

88 35mm B&W
The film interweaves four narratives chronicling the immigrant experience in New York. In the first of the four vignettes, "Bricks", a worker paid to gather bricks from an abandoned lot is crushed when a wall collapses. In the second, "Home", a young man newly arrived from Mexico goes to a party and meets a young woman who is, coincidentally, from his neighborhood back home. "Puppeteers" deals with a homeless puppeteer, who has contracted tuberculosis from staying in a shelter. He tries to enrol his beloved little daughter in school, only to be refused, because he can't produce either a phone bill or a rent receipt. The final sequence chronicles the sweatshop Seamstress, who hasn't been paid in weeks, in her struggle to gather $400 to pay for her daughter's hospital treatment back home.
