THE BLUE HOUR

Born in Switzerland, in 1960, Marcel Gisler studied economics from 1975 to 1979, then spent two years working on a farm. In 1982, he moved to Berlin to study ethnology and philosophy. Concurrently, he began making experimental films in Super-8 and video. In 1985, he directed his first feature film, Tagediebe, which won the Silver Leopard at Locarno that year. His second film, Schlaflose Nächte, received the Bronze Leopard at Locarno in 1988. In his third feature, Die blaue Stunde, the character of Theo crystallizes the themes of Gisler's first two films. It is a film "about the fear of being exploited and the vulnerability of each individual's feelings. The film describes the loneliness and isolation of an outsider, the difficulty of communication and understanding one another", explains Gisler. De Fögi isch en Souhound is a wrenching film, set in the 70's and centering around the obsession of a teenage boy for a rebellious, self-destructive rock musician.
