In Homo Sapiens?, Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn deliver a caustic comedy that transcends the borders of their country and touches upon a universal human truth. With Guillermo Francella embodying 16 different characters, the film brings to life on the big screen figures and personalities we all recognize: the hypocrite who brandishes the banner of social justice, or moral superiority, exclusively for self-serving purposes, the self-proclaimed expert who speaks with unwarranted assurance about all the matters he is ignorant of, the citizen who, behind a facade of courtesy, has no qualms about exploiting anyone. Their biting, hilariously irreverent satire targets not only specific social or political structures, but also the enduring human tendency of turning our ideals into tools of display and power. With ingenuity, rhythm, and acuity, Duprat and Cohn turn laughter into a commentary on the contradictions of our time and on all those things that even the bravest among us at times don’t have the courage to admit, even to ourselves.
