TRIBUTES / RETROSPECTIVES: Otar Iosseliani

France • 1983 • 55’• Beta • B&W
A portrait of the Basque country and people, seen not through their political problems but through an interpretation of their art and life. The film clearly shows the profound cultural autonomy of the region.

Otar Iosseliani, with only 9 feature films in a 40-year career in film, has created a hand-made, absolutely personal oeuvre (without the slightest concession to commercial demand) which, going beyond the bounds of national cinema, passes through History in pursuit of the vision of pure film. A great traveller of the inner adventure, he is one of the few remaining initiators who can depict in his images the ominous sounds of the new millennium.
