Born and raised in Nara, Japan, in 1997 she became the youngest winner of the Camera d’Or at Cannes with her first feature Suzaku. Ten years later, her fourth feature, Mogari Nu Mori (The Mourning Forest), received the Grand Prix. She also received the Carrosse d’Or from Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2009. In 2012, her films Hanezu and Genpin were internationally released, and a retrospective was held at the Cinematheque Francaise. Besides being a filmmaker, she is also the founder of the Nara IFF.
