Billy Scully dies of cancer, leaving behind a wife and two sons. While preparing for the funeral, the whole family gets together and reminisces, sometimes sadly and sometimes with a laugh, about Billy's life. His younger son, who is on the dole, learns from his uncle that his father was a leading figure in the General Strike of 1926 and many others as well. Talking with his relatives, he discovers more about his father's activities as a union man, and blames himself for not hearing all this directly from his father, having always thought that his father had wasted his life without really amounting to anything. The father's ideals inspire both his sons, and his legacy is passed on.
