August 1945. Japan surrenders and, after 51 years of occupation, Taiwan reverts back to Chinese dominion. The film is an epic story which paints a post-war portrait of Taiwan through the life of the Lin family. This family, in its day one of the most important the small town where they live, is going through a bad spell because of the misfortunes suffered by its four sons. The eldest son is murdered, the second son is missing in action after being recruited by the Japanese, the third was branded a collaborator, was imprisoned, and has now come home suffering mental problems, while the fourth was rendered deaf and mute after a childhood accident...
