WHO WE ARE
The Thessaloniki Film Festival is a top-notch cultural institution that celebrates the art of cinema all year long, initiating the audience into the magic of the seventh art. The iconic Olympion is the Festival’s home ground, situated at the famous Aristotelous Square, whereas the Festival’s actions and initiatives are carried out in many areas of Greece, as well as abroad.
THREE FILM FESTIVALS HELD ON AN ANNUAL BASIS
The Thessaloniki Film Festival, which kicked off in 1960 under the official title of “Week of Greek Cinema”. It is held annually in November, and stands out as one of the most historic film festivals worldwide, as well as the most popular and talked-of cinema event of the year in Greece.
The Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which had its first edition in 1999. Ever since it takes place annually in March, ranking among the top-10 documentary festivals on an international scale, screening the most fascinating documentary productions from all around the globe that grip its die-hard audience.
The Evia Film Project, the Festival’s “green” initiative: an eco-oriented summer get-together with the audience, targeted toward the goal of sustainability. Film screenings, development of new film projects, green actions, open discussions, masterclasses, children’s and students’ workshops , are held during a 5-day celebration of cinema in Northern Evia.
AGORA
The Agora, held across all three Festivals (TIFF, TiDF and EFP), which brings together audiovisual professionals and serves as a meeting point where the films of tomorrow are conceived.
MOVIE THEATERS
Four movie theaters that operate throughout the entire winter season, screening first-run releases, retrospectives, tributes, special screenings and events.
THE THESSALONIKI CINEMA MUSEUM
The Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, the first of its kind to be founded in Greece, showcases the history of Greek cinema while also offering a rich gamut of educational programmes addressed to children of all age groups. The movie theater Takis Kanellopoulos is housed within the Museum’s premises, featuring a variety of actions, screenings and events all year long.
THE FILM LIBRARY OF THE THESSALONIKI CINEMA MUSEUM
The Film Library of the Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, housed within the premises of the Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, features more than 15,000 titles of cinema-related books and magazines.
THE THESSALONIKI CINEMATHEQUE
The Thessaloniki Cinémathèque, launched in 2012, hosts a series of important tributes to great directors, film movements, trends and tendencies of world cinema during the season.
