Loveable

Elskling

TIFF65: Greek Premiere
40-year-old Maria, a wife, mother and career woman, struggles to raise four children and meet the challenges of a demanding career head on, while her second husband, Sigmund, travels constantly. As their marriage gradually buckles under the weight of competing demands, and despite Maria's desperate attempts to save their relationship, Sigmund announces that he wants to divorce her, forcing her to come face to face with her worst fears. A character study and a fascinating self-discovery journey, Loveable gradually shifts from simply being a relationship drama to a story about female empowerment, through a lens that is psychologically realistic, authentically honest, original in its narrative approach and never melodramatic. Deftly and deliberately avoiding any sociological cliché that turns a woman's independence into a consequence of a catastrophe or injustice, the filmmaker Lilja Ingolfsdottir provides us with the - indeed loveable - portrait of a modern woman, able to rely on herself not because she has to, but because she wants to.
