Spermageddon

Spermageddon

TIFF65: Greek Premiere
A film about the ultimate origin of life; a story that is so fundamental and universal, it is a wonder nobody went through the trouble of narrating it earlier. A tale about the human race and its beginnings (even if they are considered a given… by means of seed), which covers a wide range of cases involving the anxiety billions of sperm cells go through trying to fertilize a single chosen egg. A perilous quest during which all are doomed to encounter failure or a heroic endeavor that will be crowned with a laurel wreath of joy and notes of vulgarity at some point or another? The older generation might remember the series Once Upon a Time... Man; the younger one may recall the filmmaker’s previous hit, Dead Snow (starring Nazi zombies); only one thing is for certain: Αll of us will enjoy one of the most hilarious animations ever crafted!

Tommy Wirkola

Born in Norway, Tommy Wirkola is a writer/director known for his stylized genre filmmaking, with films made both in Norway and within the Hollywood studio system. His most recent film as director to hit theaters was Violent Night for Universal Pictures. Wirkola launched his career with Kill Buljo – The Movie (2007), a parody of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. His follow-up to that surprise hit debut was the internationally acclaimed cult classic Dead Snow (2009) – a bloody horror film featuring Nazi zombies. Dead Snow got the attention of Paramount Pictures, which led to Wirkola’s first US studio feature, the 2013 hit Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters which he wrote and directed. Wirkola then segued to the long-awaited sequel Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead, again serving as writer/director. The film premiered at Sundance in 2014 to raucous acclaim with audiences and critics. What Happened To Monday, based on a blacklist script, was his next film as director. Netflix released the film in August 2017. In 2021 Wirkola wrote and directed the Netflix film The Trip. Tommy splits his time living in Norway and the US.
