Sonia

Σόνια

The young Sonia, a sensitive soul and a dreamer, falls for the mature Tonio – a music teacher, married man, and father of a daughter. Over the course of a short but resplendent summer, before the teacher is to move abroad with his family, they are to have an intense affair that leaves its mark on them both. Abandoning the experimental approaches of his previous films, Kanellopoulos tells a simple love story in Sonia that disarms with its unfeigned tenderness. Set beside the substantial figure cut by Spyros Fokas, Antigoni Doudoumi fashions an unforgettable, ethereal Sonia who hides her sorrow behind a bitter-sweet smile, almost like an Ozu heroine. Sonia, Kanellopoulos’ final film, invites audiences to plunge – with all the innocence of childhood and the melancholy of adulthood – into their own frustrated desires.
