Interlude

Παρένθεση

A man and a woman are to meet on a train. When it stops for six hours in the man’s hometown, the pair spend the day together. Then part ways. Forever? In this film, which owes a debt to David Lean’s Brief Encounter (1945), written by Noël Coward and based on his 1936 one-act play titled Still Life, Takis Kanellopoulos allows the condensed erotic entanglement of two nameless lovers to unravel across two filmic timeframes – that of reality and that of the imaginary – in what is a deeply romantic, melancholic, and poetic charting of all those fleeting moments that leave their mark on people’s lives forever. In Interlude, Kanellopoulos strips away dialogue expression, leaving Alexandra Ladikou’s voice-over to tell the story between the lines, Nikos Mamangakis’ music to remix his fixations, and Thessaloniki to star as an unknown yet highly recognizable place where the greatest loves are born and also die. The feature won Best Art Film at the 9th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, as well as Best Cinematography for the work of Stamatis Tripos and Syrakos Danalis.
