Blaze

63rd TIFF: Greek Premiere

Blaze, a young teenager, is the sole witness to a woman being violently attacked. Left catatonic with shock, she struggles to make sense of what she saw. She retreats into imaginary worlds, where the shimmering magic dragon who has been her companion since childhood, allows her to activate her own rage and ultimately find renewal. And while her childhood is shattered forever, she is finally able to walk into the future unafraid. A unique hybrid of VFX, live action, puppetry, and animation, Blaze is an ode to female courage and a celebration of the power of the imagination.

Del Kathryn Barton

Del Kathryn Barton (1972) is an Australian artist who began drawing at a young age, and studied at UNSW Art & Design (formerly the College of Fine Arts) at the University of New South Wales. She soon became known for her psychedelic fantasy works, which she has shown in solo and group exhibitions across Australia and overseas. In 2008 and 2013, she won the Archibald Prizes for portraiture presented by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2015, her animated film The Nightingale and the Rose (an Oscar Wilde adaptation) won the Film Victoria Erwin Rado Award for Best Australian Short Film.
