Berlin, after the Wall has come down. A Red Army officer is left stranded, as his entire unit deserts. Having nowhere to go and nothing specific to do, he hopelessly roams around the city, like a ghostly shadow, scrounging food and making interesting acquaintances: a dealer selling literally everything, including newborn babies, a suspiciously friendly Berlin policeman, an attractive German girl and her violent Turkish boyfriend, a refugee girl with whom he develops a tender relationship. A sense of absurdity overflows the film, as Makavejev, once again, crafts a splendid juxtaposition of over-the-top scenes, which creates a sense of bitter irony.

Dušan Makavejev

Dušan Makavejev (1932–2019) is by far the premier figure in Yugoslavian film history. His work, deeply rooted in his native land’s experience, persistently defied the political and sexual taboos of his time and invited censorship in dozens of countries. Highly allegorical and of dreamlike texture, his films represent a sardonic and anarchist view on all kinds of oppressive regimes, sending out a universal message of liberation.
