Petre, a teenager who doesn’t get along with his parents, leaves home and goes to his elder brother Andrei, a successful actor. There he meets Dara, one of his brother’s young fans. When Andrei gives the girl his attention, Petre feels abandoned and runs away without even taking the 100 lei bill his brother had given him. A car runs him down. When he learns about this tragic accident, Andrei realizes – while watching his own smiling face in a musical on TV – that underneath his glittering success, he lives an empty life.

Mircea Săucan
Mircea Săucan was born in Paris in 1928. From 1948 to 1952, he studied in Moscow at the USSR Institute of Cinematography. After his return to Bucharest, he made his debut with several well-received documentaries. Although consistent with trends in contemporary European cinema, these films were considered noncompliant with the precepts of official ideology and were censored: the original negative copy of One Hundred Lei was burned and the film was re-edited by censors. He immigrated to Israel in 1987. After that, he directed only a short film, produced in France. In Israel he published a number of prose works that combine fantasy and grotesque. He died in 2003.
