Repast

Hatsunosuke and Michiyo have been married for five years.They do not have children and live in Osaka.Their monotonous lives are suddenly disrupted by a visit from Hatsunosuke’s niece, Satoko. Returning home one evening, Michiyo surprises her husband and Satoko, alone upstairs.Annoyed, Michiyo tells Satoko to go back and decides to accompany her to Tokyo, her beloved hometown. In Tokyo, Michiyo enjoys the taste of food, long rests and relaxation away from her husband. She writes him a letter but she never sends it. Her mother constantly reminds her of her marital duties and Hatsunosuke himself (on a business trip) stops by and takes her home.

Mikio Naruse

He was born in Tokyo, on August 20, 1905.As the youngest child of a poor family, his only chance at secondary education was to study engineering in technical school.At the age of fifteen, though having no vocation for cinema, he is employed by Shochicu studios as property manager. Later he is promoted to assistant director and in 1930 he gets to direct his first short, Chanbara fufu. In 1935, after 24 films mixing laughter with melodrama, made according to the studio demands, he leaves Shochiku for PCL,which soon grew into the important Toho company. He stayed there until 1967 and his 89th and last film. Master of «shomingeki», a realistic film genre about working class characters, and «the women’s film», he directed his best work – a series of low key masterpieces portraying the hardships of a joyless everyday existence, the dissolution of the family and the muted violence of emotions. He died in Tokyo, on July 2, 1969.
