Jafar Panahi

He was born in Mianeh, Iran, in 1960. He studied at Tehran’s College of Cinema and Television. His directorial debut, The White Balloon, won the Camera d’Or at Cannes, while his second feature, The Mirror, won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. Crimson Gold won the Un Certain Regard Jury prize at Cannes 2003 and Offside the Silver Lion for Best Director in Berlinale 2006. In 2011 he was forbidden from leaving Iran, was found guilty of ‘propaganda against the system,’ and was sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year career and travel ban.
