Swallow

Swallow

60th TIFF: Greek Premiere

A young pregnant housewife, who has suppressed her desires in favor of an outwardly ideal marriage, finds herself increasingly compelled to consume dangerous objects with no nutrition. However, the medical side of this eating disorder, which does exist and is called pica, is ignored, serving as an eloquent metaphor for the struggle of a woman rendered powerless against patriarchy. A slow-burning and provoking psychological thriller, with a subtle sense of bitter – at times, perverse – humour, creeping under the neatly made-up facade, only to reveal the true face of an oppressive system, in which men make the rules.
