The Ionian Islands experienced many conquerors until the Venetian domination. However, they preserved their Byzantine tradition and, after the fall of absolutism, they created the first Greek state: the Septinsular Republic, which will evolve into the Ionian State under British protection. The struggles against the British occupation will lead to the Union with Greece.
