SEARCHING FOR JIMI

Film description

Searching for Jimi is a different kind of road movie. It is a journey into the hearts and minds of great musicians world-wide, to experience why Jimi Hendrix and his music remain an ever constant part of their lives. Filmed in a warm, intimate style off stage, this film captures the essence of the musicians and their music. In recording studios, rehearsal halls and sometimes live, these artists perform Jimi's compositions, putting together an eclectic mix of musical styles as they re-create the sounds that shaped a generation. Taylor Dane changes the subtle "The Wind Cries Mary" into an exuberantly sung version. Laurie Anderson confesses that she has always been indifferent towards Hendrix, but in the film she unleashes her electronic instruments to play his music. In a more subdued style, country singer Charlie Musselwhite plays his acoustic guitar; rapper Chuck D. spews his anger into the microphone; Roseanne Cash feels attracted to "his sexuality and spirituality". Twenty-one years after filming Jimi Hendrix at the famous rock concert in Monterey, Pennebaker and Hegedus continue their search for the "wild man of rock" in this unique documentary.
