Images of Bombay, ?the gateway to India?. But India is also a multitude of villages. In one of them, a mahout (an elephant driver) talks about his work in the forest and then, after work is over, the elephant’s ritual bath in the river. A group of traveling shadow-theater players have arrived in the village. The narrator falls in love with one of the young artists. It is also the elephants’ mating season. Ten months later, the mahout’s wife and the elephant are pregnant. The documentary consists of three more portraits of ordinary Indians.
