Film description
The elderly Jakub is an ex-missionary who lives alone on a deserted island used as target practice for fighter planes on night-time bombing missions. In the days before World War I, Jakub spread the word of God on the African continent. His congregation now consists of one horse (named Missionary), the ruins of a church and a beehive. He spends his time translating Virgil's Georgica into Swahili, in the hope of elevating the Africans out of their poverty. The arrival of a mute boy is destined to alter both their lives. A kind of mutual understanding develops between the two, although they are in many ways apart. Both drift frequently from past to present, haunted by memories that sometimes consume them.
