GABRIEL FIGUEROA‘S EXHIBITION OPENING

Mexican filmmaker Gabriel Figueroa’s ‘1/24 of a second’ exhibition had its official opening on Monday, November 17th and it will run until November 28th at the Yeni Tzami venue. The exhibition consists of 40 greyscale stills, film photograms, restored and enlarged by the artist’s son Gabriel Figueroa Flores. The exhibition, organised by the 49th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Municipality of Thessaloniki with the Mexican embassy’s support, demonstrates the visual power of the filmmaker’s work.

‘With an interest in photography from the age of 16, Gabriel Figueroa, grew up as a man who learned to perceive reality through the camera lens. His evolution as a significant figure of the Mexican cinema, combined with the wide recognition of his work, have set him as one of the most important directors of black and white film’, quoted TIFF director Mrs. Mouzaki. On behalf of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Youth, Vassilis Gakis thanked TIFF for its collaboration and stressed its major role in highlighting the city’s cultural profile.

The Honorary Consul of Mexico Konstantinos Antoniades and the Embassy Counsellor Enrique Backmeister were also present at the event. Mr. Backmeister noted that ‘Figueroa’s cinema offers an ideal way for the viewer to comprehend what Mexico really is about’.

Mr. Gabriel Figueroa Flores talked about the invitation his father had accepted in 1971 by the Film Festival of Thessaloniki and praised the location of the exhibition.
