Meet the Future

Meet the Future initiative, entirely dedicated to film editing and held for the third consecutive year, is also part of the rich and multilayered tribute of the Festival. The younger generation of film editors from Greece, currently on their way to leave their mark on the national and international scene, will be given useful guidance and invaluable advice from the cream of the crop in the field. The participants in this year’s Meet the Future, apart from the open-to-the-public events of the tribute, will have the chance to attend two closed-session discussions with Yorgos Mavropsaridis and Giannis Halkiadakis and present a showreel of their work to the Greek and international invitees of the Festival.

WED 10.11 - 17:00

MEET THE FUTURE PRESENTATION, Warehouse C, ground floor

Honorary award to editor Despo Maroulakou

«A woman was treated with a lack of respect, as if she was intruding. Therefore, I had to earn myself the respect I merited». Despo Maroulakou earned it alright, not only as a top-notch editor, but also as a pioneer woman in a man-dominated fi eld, still lighting the way for the ones who follow. A regular of the cutting room from as early as the mid-70s, she joined forces with a rich gamut of acclaimed directors, such as Takis Spetsiotis, Stavros Tornes, Costas Ferris, Christophoros Christophis, Lefteris Xanthopoulos, Maria Gavala, Eleni Alexandraki, Kostas Aristopoulos (for her work in the fi lm Starry Dome, Maroulakou was bestowed with the Best Editing Award of the Thessaloniki Film Festival), Nikos Kornilios, Lila Kourkoulakou. Unwearied and productive, here’s what she has to say for her profession: «Editing is a strenuous and creative process that requires a well-rounded and overall knowledge, an insight as to life itself, a feeling of rhythm, a music ear, sensitivity and diligence».

Within the context of the 62nd TIFF’s tribute «In the Cut: Editing and its Secrets», Despo Maroulakou will be awarded with the honorary Golden Alexander, on Wednesday, November 10th», at 5 p.m., at Warehouse C. The award ceremony will be followed by the Meet the Future program and the presentation of the show reels of the up and coming generation of Greek editors.
